Notes

1. “A Very Short Story” begins in Padua but ends in Chicago.

2. Before These 13, Faulkner had published Soldiers’ Pay (1926), Mosquitoes (1927), Sartoris (1929), The Sound and the Fury (1929), As I Lay Dying (1930), and Sanctuary (1931). Based on this publication record, one could argue that Faulkner was the most established modernist among the three we are considering. However, according to records Faulkner kept concerning the submission and acceptance of his stories, he began writing the stories in These 13 before the first submission date in 1927 (Hans Skei, William Faulkner: The Short Story Career: An Outline of Faulkner’s Short Story Writing from 1919 to 1962 [Oslo: University Forl, 1981]).
